Overview

Nestled in the heart of Taman Mount Austin, Johor Bahru, Grandpa Yong is a fresh face on the local dining scene, offering a blend of comforting Malaysian flavors with a modern twist. This restaurant has quickly gained traction among lunchtime crowds, thanks to its approachable menu and inviting atmosphere. The space is clean and casual, catering to both solo diners and groups looking for a satisfying meal without pretense.

Grandpa Yong’s standout dishes revolve around its handmade noodles and vibrant nasi lemak variations. The mee hoon kueh (handmade flat noodles) paired with a rich, savory chicken curry delivers warmth and depth—ideal for those craving classic Malaysian comfort food. The noodles have a pleasant chewiness, complementing the thick curry gravy that many customers praise for its robust flavor. For nasi lemak lovers, their versions—especially the turmeric fried chicken thigh and spicy chicken curry options—stand out with fragrant coconut rice infused with spices, balancing richness and spice beautifully.

Apart from the mains, the snack selection in the 嘴馋系列 (snacking series) offers delightful bites such as crispy tofu and savory fish ball curry. These sides add texture and variety, perfect for sharing or snacking alongside a hearty meal. However, some guests have noted that the food is sometimes served at room temperature, which could detract from the ideal crispness and warmth expected of fried items.

The dining experience at Grandpa Yong is enhanced by its friendly service, with young staff who engage warmly, creating a welcoming vibe that fits the casual dining concept. The restaurant’s popularity is evident, often busy around meal hours, which speaks to the steady appeal among locals and visitors alike.

While the brand projects a homely, unassuming charm, some consumer feedback highlights the occasional mismatch between expectation and reality—such as the "kampung chicken" that turns out less authentic than the name promises. This points to an opportunity for Grandpa Yong to tighten its menu descriptions and maintain authenticity.

Grandpa Yong suits anyone seeking affordable, hearty Malaysian dishes with a focus on soupy noodles and traditional rice meals. Its Mount Austin location makes it accessible for office workers, families, and food explorers eager to sample Malaysian staples in a convenient and lively setting. Overall, it’s a dependable spot for casual dining with a menu that respects tradition while appealing to modern palates.

Affordable and delicious. Especially the chicken curry gravy which was thick and rich. Tom yum noodles are good too. Forgot the dish name but the rice dish with braised egg and Taiwanese style fried chicken was disappointing. The marination and batter wasn’t on point and neither was it crispy. Overall, I would return if I’m craving for an affordable soupy meal.

Sgrean discovering good food in Johore Like & Follow me for more Ordered a couple of their sides and signature. Fried sides are all pretty good, taste and crispiness are there, however served at room temperature. I preferred receiving my food hot. The curry chicken nasi lemak is flavourful, the curry mee hoon kuay, the taste of the sliced, minced meat is nice, curry broth wise, did not really stand out for me.

Been here for a few times already for lunch, a good place for mee hun kuih, with a variety of soup base / dry versions to choose from, and also assorted side dishes to spice thing up. Lunch set is quite worth it.

The 面粉糕 is offered in an assortment of different flavours. My favourite is Tom Yam. I was sharing everything with my friend and still managed to feel quite full, so the portion is quite large. The surroundings were clean and it was rather crowded, I remember many people there when I visited. The staff are young and friendly, smiling sincerely at me at the counter as if knowing me already. It’s a good place to have a casual dinner in Mount Austin.

Ah, Grandpa Yong — a name that instantly makes me imagine an old uncle waving a walking stick at me yelling, “OI, DOG! NO STEALING MY PAU!” Naturally, I trotted in with equal parts curiosity and hunger… and oh hooman, this café was buzzing. A constant stream of customers flowed through the doors in the one hour I sat there — like a river of hungry humans proving the ancient food-wisdom: “If people keep coming, the food can’t be wrong… or they’re trapped in a time loop.” Either way, Grandpa Yong was thriving. The menu? Varied. Approachable. Perfect for lunch. But then I saw it… “Kampung Chicken.” My tail wagged. My village-dog instincts tingled. But then hooman did the responsible thing — asked the counter. And the staff said: “No… it’s not kampung chicken.” Grandpa Yong, Grandpa Yong… why you bluff this dog? If the chicken is not kampung, then the menu needs to retire that word faster than Grandpa retires his dentures. Misleading meh. Also learned the café opened here in 2023, and has another branch in Bukit Indah — Grandpa is more modern and franchised than he looks. Respect. Overall? A solid lunch spot. Good traffic. Good vibes. Just… maybe don’t promise kampung chicken unless the chicken actually went to kampung school, kampung tuition, and passed kampung UPSR. ⸻ Hashtags #Dogevangelistauthor #patiencechee #BoneofLoyalty #BoneofBranding #DontBuyAdopt #AdoptDontShop #ResponsiblePetOwnership #GrandpaYong #GrandpaYongCafe #FoodieJohor #BukitIndahEats #WittyFoodReview #SarcasticCafeChronicles #DogAdventureEats #HumanTrafficTruth #MenuHonestyMatters #KampungChickenKonon #CafeReviewMY #LunchTimeFinds #HonestEats

If you’re looking for a unique and satisfying noodle dish like me, their Curry Handmade Noodles at Grandpa Yong Kitchen is a must-try. The curry broth is rich, aromatic, and flavorful without being overly spicy. It has a comforting, warming heat that complements the noodles perfectly. Their handmade noodles are soft and firm, with the ideal texture that soaks up the curry without getting soggy. You also can add up fried snack or sambal with your meal together. This dish is perfect for curry lovers or those looking to try something comforting and satisfying. Grandpa Yong Kitchen nails it with this dish! Big applause to their service crew for their friendly service when dine in. Definitely would happy to return back here with my friends and families.
